Curatorial Statement

Artists are believers, but we are living in a global society in which religion and contemporary culture often collide. How are young artists informed by their experiences with religion or lack thereof? How do they address the complex notion of religious identity in American society and culture?

Some choose to address established religions by questioning their current relevance or by inserting ancient ideas into contemporary and individualist settings. Some focus on the way government and science operate as religious institutions. Others create their own, entirely new, systems of belief. The artists all have a very determinate belief system, whether it is critically questioning religion, quietly embracing it, or creating something that is entirely their own.

In One Nation (Under God?) the connection between art and religion is broadly explored to leave the viewer not with conclusions but with subtle questions about the intersection of religion and contemporary society in both America and the global society to which it subscribes today.
